This matte painting — “Lake of Dreams” — was created entirely by hand on a computer using a Wacom Intuos Pro graphics tablet and Photoshop retouching. No AI. No generative fill. Real photography combined into a realistic yet unreal digital artwork in 2018. How beautiful was the time when skill actually mattered — when a digital artwork still had to be built piece by piece, decision by decision, by a human being who knew exactly what they were doing.
Matte painting lake — technique and process
The piece combines multiple photographic sources into a single coherent scene. Colour grading, light matching, depth management, and precise masking all had to work together. The goal: make the lake feel like a real place that simply doesn’t exist. As a result, the image sits in that precise space between photography and painting — recognisably photographic, yet impossible. Rüdiger Lauktien has been recognised multiple times for this kind of work and published in a variety of magazines over the years. Furthermore, pieces like this are why the studio still values handcraft alongside digital production tools.
